This is a story I'm writing.
Please note: This story is based off a real life. Parts of this story are true, but others are not. I will not say whose story it is. Just know that she’s out there.
I want to fall asleep again. I just woke up, but I want to sleep. I want to drift away to dreamland and dream. It could be the worst dream ever, a dream where I’m beaten or mugged or raped, but I’d rather be dreaming than awake. Only in my dreams am I who I want to be, a normal girl. A girl that talks and laughs and giggles. A girl people respect and accept. A girl that isn’t disabled.
As I continue to lay in my bed, I hear doors slamming and my mom shouting at my little sister to get up, so she can go to school. I sigh and roll over to my other side, snuggling back under my blanket. I still haven’t opened my eyes. Soon I fall back asleep again.
I dream I’m sitting in the car on the driver’s side. My older sister just went inside the Kroger to get something. I didn’t want to go in, so I sit in the car and wait for her to come back. Suddenly, a pirate ship sails across the parking lot like it’s a sea. I look at it and laugh. Is it just me or does everyone see the pirate ship? I dunno. No one else is around me.
I wake up then. The image of the pirate ship still vivid in my head. I listen to see if my little sister has left for school yet. I hear my two-year-old nephew’s voice talking to my mom. He comes after my mom has dropped off my little sister, so I decide to get up. I pull the blanket away and get out of bed. I put my glasses on and grab a pony for my hair. Then I leave my bedroom, closing the door behind me. I go to the bathroom, glad the door wasn’t shut all the way. I’ve been having problems turning the doorknob lately. After the bathroom, I go to the living room and plop on the couch. “Say good morning Ta.” My mom says to my nephew. “Morning, Ta.” He says. I smile at him, and he smiles back at me.
Then I leave the living room and the couch I’m sitting on. I travel in my mind forward who knows how many years. I’m sitting with my husband in our bed. He smiles at me strangely. “Why are you staring at me?” I ask him. “You were great last night.” He says and winks. I roll my eyes at him, only then realizing that I’m naked under the covers. I feel his hand touch my body. He’s smiling at me in that way. I smile back at him. Soon we’re enveloped in each other’s arms. Nothing could be more perfect than this moment with him.
“Do you want your milk now?” My mom asks me, interuppting my thoughts. I nod my head and get up off the couch to follow her into the kitchen. My little nephew follows us in. “Get chocolate, Nannie.” He says. My mom and I smile at him. “Okay,” My mom says. “You can have some chocolate milk.” I watch while she pours the milk into my cup with the handle. It’s actually a beer mug. It even has Budlight on it. Then she puts Hershey syrup into the cup and stirs it up with a spoon. I hope she didn’t use the same spoon she used to stir her coffee. I don’t want coffee tasting chocolate milk. When she’s done mixing the chocolate milk for my nephew and me, I hand her my pony. “Turn around.” She tells me. I do so and for the next few seconds I try to keep my neck still while she puts my hair into a bun. I think I must have a weak neck because my neck still wiggles. When she’s done putting my hair up, she walks out of the kitchen. My nephew follows her, sippinng on his chocolate milk from his sippy cup. I get my own chocolate milk off of the counter and sit on the kitchen floor. I don’t feel like sitting at the table.
As I drink my chocolate milk, I let my mind travel again to a different place and time. This time I’m fully dressed and merely sitting on the couch in my own house. My husband walks through the front door after a hard day of work. He smiles at me and comes towards me. He kisses me on the lips and his hand falls to my swollen belly. “Any day now.” He says as he sits next to me. I put my hand over his. “I know. I’m kinda nervous.” I tell him, not really wanting to think about the pain that’s headed my way. “You’ll be fine.” He tells me. Then he gasps. “I think I just felt him kick.” I roll my eyes, but say nothing. We don’t know if it’s a boy or not. I didn’t want to know.
I tilt my cup all the way up, trying to catch the last drip of chocolate milk. It falls into my mouth and I swallow before standing up. I put the cup on the counter next to the sink and leave it there. I leave the kitchen and walk back out to the living room. My nephew is playing with some little stryofoam golf balls. I debate playing with him but decide not to. He might hit me for messing with his balls. He might only be two, but he’s strong. My mom is playing a game on the computer. I watch her for a moment, but then leave her be. I walk back down the hall to my bedroom where I sit on the edge of my bed and turn my TV on with my toe. I flip through the channels, pressing the button with my toe. Nothing good is on. Just an old episode of Charmed. I turn the TV off again and stand back up. I six the sheet on my bed, which got messed up in the night. Then I grab my laptop off the shelf where I leave it at night. I plug the charger in and turn it on.
